More About the WWII POW Camp in Westfield:

Shortly after sending off BeeLines about the POW Camp, some “Want-Ads” were discovered in the April 21st, 28th, and May 5th, 1948 Westfield Republican newspapers.

In the April 21st paper, there was a large display ad: “FOR SALE – SECTIONAL (Bolted) BUILDINGS – Suitable for cottages, cabins, emergency homes, and storage – One Building 20 ft. x 125 ft. – One Building 20 ft. x 60 ft. – Two Buildings 20 ft. x 80 ft. – Buildings have 2x6 in. floor joists, doors, windows, electric wiring, sills, and piers. – Located at Nichols Ave., 4/10s mile east of Route 17 (North Portage Rd.) near village limits. – The CUYAHOGA WRECKING CO., Inc. WRECKING CONTRACTORS … Buffalo, N.Y. … Phone… or Salesman on job from 9 to 1.”

The following two weeks was a smaller ad tucked in between Help Wanted and Wanted ads: “FOR SALE – Fore Quick Disposal At $15.00 each – U.S. ARMY HEATING STOVES – Apply at Prisoner of War Camp, Nichols Ave., Westfield N. Y.”

So, it appears that the POW Camp was dismantled in late Spring of 1948. Anyone knowing more about the relocation of the buildings or the stoves, please contact Marybelle Beigh, Westfield Historian via email: westfieldhistorian@fairpoint.net, or phone: (716) 397-9254. Thanks!

Apologies for a Typo Error in the Welch Field Pool BeeLines Headline:

The “60” should have been “50” years. (Never COULD get the numbers typed correctly!)

Request for Photos and Stories from a new history client:

Does Anyone remember Cappy’s Diner in Dunkirk NY in the 1960s? It was owned and operated by a Eugene Cappellini. Contact with diner historian, Mike Engle, produced a photo of the diner’s predecessor “Gard’s Diner” which was provided by Vince Martonis, Hanover Town Historian. Mike Engle, and Eugene’s son, Gene, are looking for photos of the diner and any other information, stories, artifacts from when Gene’s dad ran the diner.
