WESTFIELD REC. DEPT. SUMMER PROGRAMS' SIGNUPS

The Village of Westfield will be delaying their summer programs' signups by one week due to some unforeseen repairs at the swimming pool. We will not be opening the pool on Monday, June 12th as was our original plan. We hope to have the pool open the following week and will keep everyone updated on the situation. Due to this uncertainty, summer programs' signups will be pushed back one week to Tuesday and Thursday, June 13th and 15th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. inside the fieldhouse at Welch Field. FOR THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED LAST SUMMER, WE HOPE TO SEND OUT MAILINGS EARLY NEXT WEEK AND WILL KEEP EVERYONE UPDATED IF THIS CHANGES.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

There are three different ways that people can sign up their child for swim lessons and the field/drama program. Everyone receiving this mailing can sign up as early as 8:00 a.m. on THURSDAY, JUNE 8TH. Those who are not on the mailing list can pick up registration forms at the village window in Eason Hall or from our website www.westfieldny.com/recreation starting TUESDAY, JUNE 13TH. Registrations will not be accepted without full payment. Non-Westfield residents will be put on a waiting list and will be called if spots open up. Below is a list of the ways that you can turn in your registration forms and/or sign up without forms:

1.) Drop them off at the village window at Eason Hall (23 Elm St. Westfield). They are open from 8-4:30 Monday-Friday.

2.) Mail them to us at 23 Elm St. Westfield, NY 14787. You can address them to the Westfield Recreation Department.

3.) Come to our registration nights on Tuesday & Thursday June 13th and 15th from 6-8 p.m. inside the field house at Welch Field. Once again though, we are encouraging everyone to SIGN UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE since we have limited spots in the various programs.

This will also be the best time to come and ask any questions that you have about any of our programs including the drama, field, and swim programs. Other community groups such as the Patterson Library, Girl Scouts, and the Golden Hawks will also have tables at our registration nights. This program is for students entering AT LEAST KINDERGARTEN and up and is co-ed. The program runs from late June through mid August (7 Week Program) and sign-ups are in early June.

We offer both morning and evening classes. Morning classes can be taken on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday mornings. Evening classes can be taken on Monday/Wednesday evenings. Each class meets twice a week and is 40 minutes long.

Our swim lessons are accredited by the American Red Cross as part of their "Learn to Swim" Program. As part of the program, we have 6 different levels of swim lessons:

  • Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills: Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.
  • Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills: Children will learn basic swimming skills.
  • Level 3: Stroke Development: Additional guided practice will help students improve their skills.
  • Level 4: Stroke Improvement: Kids will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their stroke and gain additional aquatic skills.
  • Level 5: Stroke Refinement: Guidance allows kids to refine their strokes and become more efficient swimmers.
  • Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, and gain the ability to swim smoothly over greater distances. Swimmers will also have the option to participate in more advanced courses.

*For more information on American Red Cross swimming programs, visit their website https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/swimming

At the end of the program, each participant will receive an evaluation form on the progress they've made throughout the summer. The evaluation form will either recommend for the participant to move up to the next level of lessons for next summer, or to repeat the same level in order to improve their skills.

We typically have anywhere from 6 to 9 lifeguards working during swim lessons (depending on how many levels are being taught). We typically have a leader and a helper for each class (2 helpers for level 1), as well as a deck guard.
