Swim Lessons

SOME GENERAL NOTES ABOUT REGISTRATION

● Registration for all Welch Field programs will be open to Westfield Residents only at first. Non-Westfield residents can register (without payment) to be put on a waiting list should openings arise. (Except for aquacize, lap swim and open swim)

● All program registrations will be fulfilled in the order they are submitted.

● All children and adults over age 2 will be required to wear a face covering while in the field house, on the field house patio, waiting in line for the pool, or sitting on the sidelines at the pool.

● Patrons using any Welch Field swim or field program must be registered and paid in full before, as well as sign (or have their parent/guardian sign if under 18) a waiver before attending the program.

SWIM LESSON INFORMATION

*Everyone who is a Westfield resident who had a child who participated in swim lessons in 2019, will be receiving a mailing from us sometime the next few days. In addition, all pre-K and kindergarten students at WACS will be receiving the same mailing (since they were too young to participate in 2019). All returning participants as well as current pre-K and kindergarten students can sign up for swim lessons starting at 8:00 a.m. on MONDAY, JUNE 7TH. We are encouraging everyone to sign up ASAP as we have limited spots this summer. Information on how to sign up is below.

On the swim lessons registration form, there is a spot that lists all the possible days and times that your child can have swim lessons. PLEASE NOTE THAT SWIM LESSONS WILL BE SCHEDULED DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR. Overall, there are 5 different time slots for each session (except for levels 5 & 6). Please note that at this time we are not 100 % sure if we will be able to offer evening lessons.

For morning lessons for levels 1, 2, 3 and 4, we will have four different “Two Week” sessions with classes four times a week. All these classes will meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for two consecutive weeks. All lessons will be 25 minutes long and will consist of 8 total classes. There will be no lessons on Fridays. For levels 1, 2, 3 and 4, we will be limiting each class to THREE participants. We are doing this to create enough social distancing between all participants, helpers and lifeguards. In addition, for levels 1, 2 and 3, each child MUST HAVE AN ADULT OR SOMEONE 13 OR OLDER go in the water with them for each lesson to assist them in their various strokes. We are doing this so that our lifeguards and participants are not within 6 feet of each other without face coverings.

For levels 5 & 6 and evening lessons (if we can have them), we will have two different “Four Week” sessions with classes twice a week. All these time slots are two lessons a week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday). For levels 5 & 6, we will be limiting each class to FIVE participants for the sake of social distancing.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

There are three different ways that people can sign up their child for swim lessons and the field/drama program. Everyone receiving this mailing can sign up as early as 8:00 a.m. on MONDAY, JUNE 7TH. Those who are not on the mailing list can pick up registration forms at the village window in Eason Hall or from our website www.westfieldny.com/recreation starting MONDAY, JUNE 14TH. Registrations will not be accepted without full payment (except for non-residents on the waiting list). Non-Westfield residents will be put on a waiting list and will be called if spots open up. Below is a list of the ways that you can turn in your registration forms and/or sign up without forms:

1.) Drop them off at the village window at Eason Hall (23 Elm St. Westfield). They are open from 8-4:30 Monday-Friday.

2.) Mail them to us at 23 Elm St. Westfield, NY 14787. You can address them to the Westfield Recreation Department.

3.) Come to our registration nights on Tuesday & Thursday June 15th and 17th from 6-8 p.m. inside the field house at Welch Field. Once again though, we are encouraging everyone to SIGN UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE since we have limited spots in the various programs.

This will also be the best time to come and ask any questions that you have about any of our programs including the drama, field, and swim programs. Other community groups such as the Patterson Library, YWCA, and the Golden Hawks will also have tables at our registration nights. Please note that NO registration forms will be accepted without full payment.

This program is for students entering AT LEAST KINDERGARTEN and up and is co-ed. The program runs from late June through mid August (7 Week Program) and sign-ups are in early June.

We offer both morning and evening classes. Morning classes can be taken on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday mornings. Evening classes can be taken on Monday/Wednesday evenings. Each class meets twice a week and is 40 minutes long.

Our swim lessons are accredited by the American Red Cross as part of their "Learn to Swim" Program. As part of the program, we have 6 different levels of swim lessons:

  • Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills: Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.
  • Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills: Children will learn basic swimming skills.
  • Level 3: Stroke Development: Additional guided practice will help students improve their skills.
  • Level 4: Stroke Improvement: Kids will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their stroke and gain additional aquatic skills.
  • Level 5: Stroke Refinement: Guidance allows kids to refine their strokes and become more efficient swimmers.
  • Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, and gain the ability to swim smoothly over greater distances. Swimmers will also have the option to participate in more advanced courses.

*For more information on American Red Cross swimming programs, visit their website https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/swimming

At the end of the program, each participant will receive an evaluation form on the progress they've made throughout the summer. The evaluation form will either recommend for the participant to move up to the next level of lessons for next summer, or to repeat the same level in order to improve their skills.

We typically have anywhere from 6 to 9 lifeguards working during swim lessons (depending on how many levels are being taught). We typically have a leader and a helper for each class (2 helpers for level 1), as well as a deck guard.
